Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe, known professionally as Jelly Roll Morton, was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer. He is widely recognized as one of the most important figures in the development of early jazz, claiming to have invented jazz in 1902. His compositions blended ragtime, blues, and other musical forms.
