Tommy Dorsey (1905–1956), known as the 'Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,' was one of the most popular bandleaders of the Swing Era. His smooth trombone tone and ability to blend sweet ballads with hot swing made his orchestra one of the most commercially successful of the 1940s. Dorsey's band launched the careers of Frank Sinatra and Dick Haymes, and produced numerous hits including 'I'll Never Smile Again' and 'Marie.' His brother Jimmy Dorsey also led a successful orchestra, and the two occasionally collaborated and competed throughout their careers.
