Tito Puente (1923–2000), known as 'El Rey' (The King), was one of the most celebrated Latin jazz musicians of all time. Born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Puente became the definitive figure in mambo and Latin jazz, leading his orchestra for over five decades. His recordings of 'Oye Como Va' and 'Para Los Rumberos' became Latin jazz standards, and his arrangements blended Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz harmonies in a uniquely powerful way. Puente recorded over 100 albums and won five Grammy Awards during his legendary career.
