Duke Ellington (1899–1974) is widely considered one of the greatest composers in American music history. Leading his orchestra for over five decades, Ellington elevated jazz to the level of classical composition. His works range from three-minute dance pieces to extended suites, and include timeless standards like 'Take the A Train,' 'Mood Indigo,' and 'Sophisticated Lady.' Ellington's unique approach to orchestration—writing specifically for the individual musicians in his band—created a sound that was unmistakably his own.
