Stan Kenton (1911–1979) was an American jazz musician, composer, and bandleader whose innovative big band sound pushed the boundaries of jazz. Known for his 'progressive jazz' and 'innovations in modern music' concerts, Kenton led one of the most ambitious orchestras in jazz history. His arrangements featured complex harmonies, unusual time signatures, and a massive brass section that became his trademark. Kenton's orchestra served as a launching pad for many jazz legends including Lee Konitz, Art Pepper, and Maynard Ferguson.
