Charles Mingus (1922–1979) was one of the most important composers and bassists in jazz history. His music drew from a wide range of influences including gospel, blues, bebop, and classical music, creating a uniquely personal and emotionally powerful sound. Mingus led his Jazz Workshop, a group that emphasized spontaneous composition and collective improvisation. His major works include 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,' 'Fables of Faubus,' 'Better Git It in Your Soul,' and the extended suite 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.' His compositions have been arranged for big bands and continue to challenge and inspire musicians.
