American composer, arranger, and pianist Ralph Burns (1922–2001) was a pivotal figure in jazz and popular music. He rose to prominence in the 1940s as a key arranger for Woody Herman's big band, shaping the sound of progressive jazz. Burns later achieved significant success in Hollywood, composing and arranging for numerous films and Broadway productions, earning an Academy Award for his work on "Cabaret."
