American lyricist and librettist Howard Dietz (1896–1983) was a prominent figure in American popular music from the 1920s to the 1950s. Best known for his long-standing collaboration with composer Arthur Schwartz, he penned lyrics for numerous Broadway musicals and Hollywood films, including hits like "Dancing in the Dark" and "You and the Night and the Music." His sophisticated and witty lyrics contributed significantly to the Golden Age of American songwriting.
