American composer and arranger, Earle Hagen (1919-2008), alongside Herbert Spencer (1905-1992) and later Lionel Newman (1916-1989), formed the highly influential Hagen/Rogers/Newman partnership, a prolific force in Hollywood film and television scoring from the 1930s through the 1970s. Their collaborative efforts defined the sound of countless classic shows, including "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," showcasing their mastery of jazz-infused orchestral arrangements and memorable melodic themes. Hagen, in particular, is credited with pioneering the use of the four-note "shave and a haircut" motif in popular music.
