An American composer and bandleader, Edmund L. Gruber (1879–1941) is primarily remembered for his 1917 composition "The Caissons Go Rolling Along." This patriotic march became the official song of the U.S. Army Field Artillery and remains a recognizable piece of American military music. While not a jazz composer in the traditional sense, his work reflects the popular musical styles prevalent in the early 20th century United States.
