Lionel Hampton (1908-2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, drummer, bandleader, and composer, a pivotal figure in the Swing and early Bebop eras. Renowned for his electrifying and virtuosic vibraphone playing, Hampton brought the instrument to prominence in jazz. He first gained fame with Benny Goodman's Quartet, breaking racial barriers in the process. Later, he led his own highly successful big band for over five decades, known for its energetic performances and innovative arrangements. Hampton's band was a launching pad for many future jazz stars and significantly contributed to the evolution of large ensemble jazz.
