J.J. Johnson (1924-2001) was an American jazz trombonist, composer, and arranger, widely recognized as a pioneer of the bebop trombone style. Emerging in the 1940s, Johnson transformed the trombone from a primarily glissando-based instrument into a virtuosic voice capable of intricate, fast-paced melodic lines. His innovative technique and sophisticated harmonic understanding influenced countless trombonists. He collaborated with jazz giants like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie, and co-led a notable quintet with Kai Winding. Johnson’s arrangements, often characterized by their elegant voicings and swinging rhythms, significantly contributed to the evolution of modern jazz orchestration, particularly for big bands and smaller ensembles.
